UF Malmö membership grants you free or discounted entry to our events. The following link takes you straight to our sign-up form. North Korean Human Rights and World Peace: Ties with Russia — a lecture about the global implications of North Korea's increasingly closer relations with Russia, complemented by testimonies from three survivors.When? 20 March, 17:15-19:30
Where? OR:C231The deployment of North Korean troops to Russia’s war against Ukraine not only constitutes a grave human rights violation, but it also threatens global peace. This event aims to raise awareness about the violence, oppression, and systematic abuse of civil liberties committed by the North Korean regime, as well as shed light on the harsh realities of North Korean workers dispatched to Russia. The discussion seeks to garner international attention and support for a fundamental change in North Korea.Supporting Organisation: The Peaceful Unification Advisory Council

1) Introduction and overview by Kwon Eun-Kyoung, Director of the Network for North Korean Democracy and Human Rights (NK Net)2) Testimonies from survivors:• Human rights violations and the erosion of peace due to the Russia-Ukraine war: Mariia Chernozhukova, a Ukrainian citizen who experienced the war in Donbas after its outbreak in 2014. Currently resides in South Korea, working as an artist and model.• The reality of life and human rights conditions in the North Korean military: Ryu Seong-Hyeon, a former North Korean air force soldier who defected to South Korea through the Demilitarized Zone in 2019.• Human rights violations against North Korean workers dispatched to Russia: Kim Haneul, a North Korean laborer sent to Russia, where he worked until his escape to South Korea in 2024.3) Q&A session4) Mingle and catering

led by Dr Stephen Marr from Malmö University’s Department of Global Political Studies.Panelists:
• Dr Ryan Bakker — has a PhD in Political Science and Government from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Sharjah.• Dr Moira Nelson — has a PhD in Political Science and Government from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and held a post-doctoral fellowship at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at Lund University.• Dr Jonathan Polk — has a PhD from the University of Georgia in Political Science, and held a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Gothenburg. He is a Professor at Lund University.• Dr Isobel Squire — has a PhD in Global Politics from Malmö University. She is a Lecturer at Malmö University.

Where? OR:C231The panel discussion will delve into the complex dynamics of American politics and societal changes during the initial phase of Donald Trump's second term in office. Domestic policy shifts and their ripple effects across institutions will be examined, and the broader implications for democratic values, the rise of authoritarian tendencies, and policy-making processes both within the U.S. and internationally will be analysed.To encourage active participation and diverse perspectives, the final portion of the session will be devoted to an interactive Q&A with the audience.

There are 13 spots available in the travel group. The price of participation is 3500 SEK/student, which includes all travel and public transportation costs, accommodation, and breakfast in all mornings. UF Malmö will fund a selected list of activities.
